Week 4 Preview: Sharks vs. Pirates

05/01/2019 2:52 PM -

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Sharks (1-1) travel to Worcester, MA this Saturday to take on the Massachusetts Pirates (1-2). The Sharks return to the turf after defeating the Columbus Lions (0-2) 48-24 in week 2 and enjoyed a week 3 bye. Both the Sharks and Pirates find themselves in an early season need for wins; with the Sharks looking to add to their 1 game win-streak.

The Sharks have a record of 2-1 against the Pirates. The last time these two met was in 2018 at The Shark Tank when the Pirates were the #1 ranked NAL team.. The Sharks wrecked the Pirates ship and took down the league leaders 45-36 to move into first place. However, that’s in the past as both teams look to the present which has the Sharks ranked #3 in the NAL, while the Pirates stand at #4.

The Sharks look to use their talent & depth to get the win against the Pirates. Devin Wilson leads a stacked receiving core with 207 receiving yards and three touchdowns.  Durron Neal showed he was a force to be reckoned with. He had a big game in his 1st outing with the Sharks in week 2. Quarterback Jonathan Bane’s range of targets will put pressure on the Pirates defense which gave up 104 points in their first two games of the season and will likely suffer a similar fate against a Sharks offense that crushed Columbus in Georgia with five passing touchdowns.

On defense, Jacksonville is improving, forcing six sacks and two fumbles in two games. The linebacker core looks stronger than ever with Cody Saul forcing two turnovers and Zack Brown having racked up 8.5 tackles and one sack so far this season. Returning Defensive Back Seth Ellis made a huge impression against Columbus totaling seven tackles, one interception, and four pass breakups in his 2019 debut.

When it comes to the Pirates, they have 2018 reigning NAL MVP, Quarterback Sean Brackett. Brackett is off to a slow start this season completing under 50% of his passes (44-of-89 49.44%) for 397 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Pirates have the league-leader in rushing, Quayvon Hicks, who will look to become a factor against Jacksonville. The fullback from Georgia has 47 yards and two touchdowns on the year. The Pirates have done a great job spreading the ball around to their receivers this season, Marty Gilyard leads the team in receving touchdowns (5), Thomas Owens in receptions (19) and yards (156).

“The Battle By Boston” will take place at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA and all fans can watch on Youtube Live, links will be posted on the Sharks Facebook page on game day prior to kickoff. You can also watch all NAL games on the National Arena League’s Youtube Channel.
