SHARKS KEEP JACKSONVILLE NATIVE HUNT

10/24/2012 2:50 PM -

JACKSONVILLE – As the Arena Football League’s exclusive period continues, the 2012 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks retained another key part the team’s defensive core on Wednesday, announcing that Jack Linebacker Charlie Hunt has been assigned to the Jacksonville roster on a two-year contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hunt, 29, made 14 starts for the Sharks in 2012, returning to action in Week 7 after beginning the season on injured reserve. Spending all of his time at Jack, Hunt ranked third on the team with 51 total tackles (37 solo), recorded eight pass breakups, grabbed a pair of interceptions and forced a fumble.

“With his size and wingspan, Charlie is a quarterback’s nightmare,” Moss said. “He’s been a great teammate over the last two years and it’s great to have a Jacksonville native become part of our defensive core.”

Hunt turned in one of his best performances of the season in Week 13 against Tampa Bay as he racked up seven total tackles (six solo) in that game. Hunt showed a playmaking flair with a 32-yard interception return in Week 10 against Philadelphia and later picked off another pass in a Week 18 contest against the Milwaukee Mustangs.

As an AFL rookie in 2011, Hunt appeared in 13 games (12 starts), totaling 55.5 tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss. In a game against the Iowa Barnstormers, Hunt became the first – and to this point, only – Shark defender to record three interceptions in a single game. Hunt finished the 2011 season with 11 interceptions.

Before beginning his AFL career, Hunt played two seasons in the American Indoor Football Association, suiting up for the Utah Saints in 2009 and the Wyoming Cavalry in 2010. A Jacksonville native who attended Episcopal School of Jacksonville, Hunt spent his collegiate career at Florida State University.
