The Jacksonville Sharks (10-4) recaptured the top spot in the South Division after defeating the Tampa Bay Storm (10-4), 49-47, in front of a sold out crowd of 13,011 on Sea Best Field at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Jacksonville quarterback Aaron Garcia was knocked out of the game with a head injury in the Sharks second series and backup quarterback Bernard Morris entered the game to led the Sharks to a victory.
The Storm recorded three sacks in the first half but still trailed by 7 points at halftime, 21-14. The Sharks and Storm continued to match scores and stops, seemingly blow-for-blow. The difference came with nearly 12 minutes left in the game when the Storm failed to convert a PAT.
The Sharks drove the field late in the game and scored to lead 49-41 with 43.7 seconds in the game. The Storm rallied and quarterback found the end zone with seconds left on the clock. The Sharks snuffed out the two-point conversion attempt to lead - and go on to win the game - by a score of 49-47.
After replacing Garcia, Morris completed 21-of-40 balls for 199 yards and four touchdowns while Jason Willis led Jacksonville receivers on 11 receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Storm quarterback Brett Dietz finished the game 22-32 for 297 yards and 110 touchdowns and Hank Edwards led Storm receivers with seven receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
The Sharks will travel to Bossier-Shreveport to take on the Battle Wings (3-11) Saturday, July 24 at 8:05pm. The game will be broadcast live on AFL Live powered by Nifty TV at niftytv.com/afl.
