JACKSONVILLE - Through eleven games, Jacksonville Sharks Fullback Derrick Ross is living up to his moniker of the “Greatest Of All Time”. Ross is leading the National Arena League in virtually every rushing stat, from touchdowns to rushing yards, points, and rushing attempts. His dominance on the field comes as no surprise to his legions of fans in Jacksonville, and come the end of the season, should be rewarded with the NAL Most Valuable Player award.
Ross’ three touchdowns and 67 yards in the game on June 10th against the High Country Grizzlies was just the latest in a series of impressive performances for the 6 foot, 250 lb. bruiser from Huntsville, Texas. Ross leads the National Arena League in not only rushing touchdowns (24), but also in total rushing yards (488), rushing attempts (102), rushing yards per attempt (4.8), rushing yards per game (44.4) and total points scored for the season (156 or 14.2/game). Ross has more touchdowns and points for the season than a team in the NAL.
Ross is the only non-QB in the NAL in the top ten in yards per game (10th) and total offensive TDs (5th), an unbelievable stat considering the heavy pass-happy style of arena football.
The Sharks have the top rushing offense and an undefeated record in the National Arena League, due in large part to the incredible play of Derrick Ross. Jacksonville leads the NAL in total rushing yards, yards per rush, and rushing touchdowns. Ross was quick to give credit to his offensive line and the Sharks coaching staff, especially offensive line coach Stan Wrubluski.
Ross has especially stepped up his game in the last few weeks, following the season-ending injury to starting Quarterback Tommy Grady April 24th against the Monterrey Steel. Since then, Ross has gone on to rush for 344 yards and 15 touchdowns..
When asked what winning the National Arena League MVP would mean to him, Ross said “I won it before in 2007 with Cologne (NFL Europe League), but this is now and to win would be awesome.”
With one game left in the NAL season, Ross can cement his status as the frontrunner for the MVP honors by continuing his recent streak of incredible performances. Jacksonville finishes the season with a game vs. the Monterrey Steel allowing Ross to play in front of the loudest crowd in the NAL this Saturday night.
Ross was quick to dismiss retirement when asked if he would consider going out on top as the MVP and NAL champion after his 12th professional season. “I haven’t even thought about that, I guess we’ll see what happens.” Ross continued, “I’m gonna play ball until then.”
