JACKSONVILLE  – The (11-1) Jacksonville Sharks faced their first loss to the (7-4) Monterrey Steel 44-37 during 80’s Night. The Sharks now look to face redemption against the Steel during the NAL Playoffs.

Quarterback Jason Boltus started this game in order to give Damien Fleming rest before the playoffs. Boltus and Devin Wilson were the first to put points on the board for the Sharks with a short touchdown pass in the endzone. The Steel struck back as Bernard Morris ran into the endzone. Mo Ruffins fought through the Steels’ defense to score the Sharks another touchdown and put them up 14-6. Nick Belcher knocked through a deuce moments later. The Sharks defense came out strong with a sack by Damien Jacobs and interceptions by both Terry Johnson and Charlie Hunt.

The second quarter began with an interception by Damien Jacobs,, which eventually allowed Jason Boltus to sneak in his first running touchdown for the Sharks. The Steel put up a fight with two touchdowns that went unanswered from the Sharks, but their extra point attempts were no good. Towards the end of the second quarter, Ify Umodu gave the Sharks another touchdown. The half ended with a successful field goal by Monterrey’s Brandon Rutherford, the score 29-21 Sharks.

In the third quarter, the Steel started to take over, Jabari Fletcher scoring a touchdown and Brandon Rutherford making a field goal to put the Steel up 31-29. Damien Fleming then came in to take over for Jason Boltus. The Steel shut out the Sharks from scoring at all in the third quarter - the only time the Sharks have been stopped for an entire quarter this season.

The fourth quarter, Dale Pierson brought the Shark Tank back to life with a sack, but it was soon followed with a Monterrey touchdown by London Crawford. With the help of Derrick Ross and Ify Umodu on the two-point conversion, the game became tied at 37 with 5 minutes left in the game. London Crawford scored again, putting the Steel up 44-37 in the final minutes, winning Monterrey the game.

Next, the Sharks will play the Monterrey Steel again, this time for a playoff game on June 24 at the Shark Tank at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks vs. Columbus Lions game for the NAL Championship.
