ATLANTA – The National Arena League announced today that they have unveiled their 2017 National Arena League trophy. The trophy will be given to the 2017 NAL Champions, a title that will be determined on July 10, 2017 at the National Arena League Championship game. The game will be held in Jacksonville, Florida and the game will feature the league’s two best teams - the Columbus Lions (10-3) and the Jacksonville Sharks (12-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. The league decided that this will not be a traveling trophy, like the well-known Stanley Cup of the NHL. The NAL Championship Trophy will be awarded to the winning team to keep in their team’s city every year.
The 25 pound silver-plated pewter trophy was designed and manufactured by Bennett Awards, a California based trophy & award manufacturer, known for creating awards for companies such as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Facebook, Nike and Audi of America. The trophy is 28” tall and will make its first appearance at the National Arena League Championship Media Day on July 9th in Jacksonville, FL.
“We pride ourselves on creating premier cutting edge awards and trophies and it’s a great fit to work with a premier cutting edge organization like the National Arena League. This stand out, one of a kind award is sure to capture people’s attention and we are thrilled to partner with the NAL to debut this striking custom design.” said Bob Bennett, owner of Bennett Awards.
The NAL will make history July 10th as they launch their first-ever National Arena League Championship game in Jacksonville, FL. The hosting team, the Jacksonville Sharks finished the regular season 11-1 as the league’s top seed. Last Saturday, they defeated the Monterrey Steel 43-32 in Jacksonville to advance to the Championship game. The Sharks opponent is the Columbus Lions, a team that finished the season 9-3 as the league’s number three seed. The Lions defeated the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks 52-50 in Allentown, PA to advance to the NAL Championship. The last time these two teams met was April 29 in an exciting Saturday night showdown where the Sharks came away with a close 37-28 victory in Jacksonville.
Both teams entering this championship joined the league in 2017. The Sharks came from the Arena Football League and the Lions from the American Indoor Football League. The Lions have played arena football since 2007 and have won three league championships, three conference championships and have made nine total playoff appearances. The Sharks, have been in existence since 2010 and has won one league championship, three conference championships, four division titles and has had seven playoff appearances in eight years.
