09/02/2012 7:41 PM - JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Sunday that two former Sharks have joined National Football League practice squads within the past day. Defensive lineman Jerry Brown and defensive back Ross Weaver have signed with the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions, respectively.
Each player participated in their respective team’s traning camp and preseason. Both Brown and Weaver were released on Friday’s NFL “cut-down” day before being added to the practice squad. As the 2012 NFL season progresses, both players will continue to work toward a spot on each team’s 53-man active roster.
The 24-year-old Brown was a member of the Sharks’ championship-winning squad in 2011, playing in 13 regular-season games that year. With the Sharks, Brown totaled 19.5 tackles (15 solo) and ranked tied for second on the team with six sacks and third on the team with 7.5 tackles for loss. He also tied for the team lead with three fumble recoveries, forced a fumble and blocked a kick.
Brown then joined the San Antonio Talons for the 2012 season, helping that team capture a Central Division championship. Brown played in 11 games with the Talons before signing with the Colts in the middle of the AFL season. Despite the shortened season, Brown finished sixth on the team with 27.5 total tackles (21 solo) and recorded five sacks. Before beginning his professional career, Brown played at the University of Illinois.
Weaver, 25, was originally assigned to the Sharks’ 2012 roster on Sep. 29, 2011. Before getting a chance to suit up in a Shark uniform, Weaver signed with the Lions on Dec. 28 of that year, joining Detroit’s practice squad just before the end of the NFL regular season. Weaver had also been assigned to the Jacksonville roster after the 2010 AFL season but signed with the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad in November of 2010. A native of Southfield, Michigan, Weaver played collegiate football at Michigan State.
