SCOOTER BERRY JOINS MONTREAL ALOUETTES

09/21/2012 1:41 PM - JACKSONVILLE – The 2012 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Friday that defensive lineman Scooter Berry has signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, joining the team’s practice roster.

The 26-year-old Berry recently completed a stellar rookie season in the AFL, establishing a new franchise record with 13.0 sacks, a total that ties him with Craig Walls for the all-time AFL rookie mark. Berry started 16 of the team’s 18 regular-season games, leading the Sharks in sacks, tackles for loss (12.0) forced fumbles (5), quarterback hits (3) and blocked kicks (2).

Berry finished fifth on the team with 30 total tackles (25 solo), totals that led all Shark defensive linemen. He ended the regular season on a particularly strong note, recording at least a partial sack in six of the team’s last seven games. Berry’s consistent performance earned him a spot on the All-Arena Second Team.

Before beginning his AFL career, Berry spent time with the National Football League’s Houston Texans during training camp prior to the 2011 season. The native of North Babylon, New York played collegiately at West Virginia.

Berry becomes the second Shark defensive lineman to sign with a CFL team in recent days, as Andre Caroll joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers earlier this week. A total of four players who competed for the Sharks during the 2012 AFL season are currently on CFL rosters, as defensive lineman Derrick Summers and offensive lineman Michael Ola joined the Toronto Argonauts and the Alouettes, respectively, earlier this season.
