JACKSONVILLE – The 2012 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks continued to build in the trenches on Friday, announcing that offensive/defensive lineman Cornelius Lewis has been assigned to the team’s roster on a two-year contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A Jacksonville native, the 26-year-old Lewis joins the Sharks after spending each of his first two Arena Football League seasons with the Iowa Barnstormers. Lewis first joined Iowa late in the 2011 season, first being assigned to the team on July 7 of that year. He went on to start each of the Barnstormers’ final three regular season games in 2011 before returning to the team in 2012. This past season, Lewis started 11 of the 12 games in which he played, including Iowa’s Week 11 trip to Sea Best Field.

Lewis originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts following the 2009 NFL Draft, but did not appear in a game for the team. He finished his collegiate career as a standout offensive lineman at Tennessee State, starting all 23 of his team’s games after transferring to the school from Florida State. Lewis was a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team selection, and as a senior in 2008 he graded out at over 90 percent for the season and did not allow a single sack.

Lewis attended Raines High School in Jacksonville, where he was rated as the No. 18 guard prospect in the country. Lewis was a two-time All-Gateway Conference selection and was tabbed as a member of the Florida Times-Union Super 24 team in 2003.
