JACKSONVILLE – The 2012 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks added a second rookie receiver in as many days, announcing Thursday that Charles Gilbert has been assigned to the roster on a one-year rookie contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 25-year-old Gilbert (6'0", 188) is a Jacksonville native who will get his first shot in the Arena Football League with his hometown team. Gilbert is no stranger to professional football in Jacksonville, as he participated in mini-camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars before signing with the team this past June. The Jaguars waived Gilbert during NFL training camp.

Before beginning his professional career, Gilbert played his final two seasons at Concordia University, St. Paul in Minnesota. He led the Golden Bears with 46 receptions for 1,068 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior in 2011, hauling in nearly half of the team’s 30 passing touchdowns. He caught a touchdown pass in 10 of the 11 games in which he played, starting the year with a score in Concordia’s first eight contests. Gilbert was also the team’s second-leading kick returner, racking up 364 yards on just 17 runbacks.

Gilbert started his college career at Webber International University, spending his first two collegiate seasons at the NAIA level. He attended Ridgeview High School, where he was a three-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball and track. Gilbert was a two-time All-Conference performer in both football and basketball.
