JACKSONVILLE – The 2013 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks continued to build defensive depth on Tuesday, as the team announced that linebacker Eze Obiora has been assigned to the Jacksonville roster on a one-year rookie contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 23-year-old Obiora (6’2”, 240) is set for his first taste of the Arena Football League after beginning his professional career with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2013. Obiora signed with Hamilton in May of that year. Though the Tiger-Cats released him prior to the start of the regular season, Obiora did log a tackle in the team’s preseason opener against the Montreal Alouettes.

Obiora spent his final two collegiate seasons at Southern Illinois University, where he emerged as one of the Salukis’ top pass rushers during his senior season in 2012. That year, Obiora led the team and ranked second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with 8.0 sacks while also ranking third on the squad with 12.0 tackles for loss. Obiora notched three tackles in the season opener against Eastern Illinois and later recorded a safety against South Dakota State.

As a junior in 2011, Obiora played in all 11 of the Salukis’ games, totaling 16 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Prior to his time at Southern Illinois, Obiora starred at the College of DuPage, where he recorded 40 tackles, 14 sacks, eight forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 2010.

Obiora is a native of the United Kingdom, where he grew up playing rugby. He first played football in 2008, when he came to the United States and spent the fall at Purdue University. Obiora attended the Harrow School.
