FISHERS, IN - The Jacksonville Sharks escaped with a win over the Fishers Freight 46-40. After a lackluster first half the Sharks made a big second half comeback, scoring 32 points after halftime. Jacksonville completed the sweep after playing the Fishers Freight back-to-back for two weeks in a row.
The game started with the Sharks forcing a four and out on Freights opening drive. Jacksonville took the early lead with a key pass from Blaine Espinosa to Larry McCammon, followed by a 2 yard rushing touchdown from Espinosa. The Freight answered with a big 40 yard kickoff return by #2 Simpson and an 8 yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Shoemaker to make the score 7-7.
The Freight held the Sharks on the next two possessions and scored on their next drive with a 25 yard pass to #12 Kress making it 14-7. A blocked Sharks field goal gave the Freight the ball at the 1-yard line, when they scored again they took the lead at 21-7. On the Sharks next drive Marcus Rodgers made a fantastic leaping catch over the end zone boards for a Sharks touchdown to cut the lead to 21-14. Then Freight Shoemaker ran for another touchdown giving the Freight a 28-14 lead as the teams went into halftime.
In the third quarter, new Sharks quarterback Tyler Huff was brought into the game and promptly ran for a 28 yard touchdown. The extra point was missed due to a poor snap, making it 28-20. After another Sharks defensive stop Huff took the field and hurdled a defender to get to first and goal. The Sharks drive sputtered and they ended up kicking a short field goal narrowing the deficit to 28-23.
In the fourth quarter, Jacksonville forced a fumble. Ka'ron Ashley got a key first down at the 13 yard line. Then Huff handed the ball to Sharks running back Larry Mccammon for a touchdown. Head coach Jason Gibson decided to go for two. The play was good and the Sharks took a 31 to 28 lead.
Chris Rice made a big sack, to force fourth and long. The Freight chose to try a long field goal attempt, it was no good and the Sharks got the ball. On the Sharks next drive Huff completed a nice pass to set up another touchdown, putting the Sharks ahead 37-28. The Freight back up QB returned with another touchdown drive making it 37 to 34. Jacksonville answered with a 9 yard tush push touchdown and an extra point to go up 44-34. They then scored a deuce on the following kickoff to make it 46-34. The Freight added a late 30-yard touchdown pass, but Jacksonville held on to win 46-40.
The Sharks now stand 6-2 and will face the Massachusetts Pirates on the road next week, making it the second away game in a row. Tickets for the Sharks next home game against the defending Champion Arizona Rattlers on June 7th are now on sale. For tickets call 904-621-0700 or go to jaxsharks.com
